Amrita Pritam

Amrita Pritam was a prominent Indian writer and poet, known for her works in Punjabi and Hindi. She is considered one of the leading 20th-century poets of the Punjabi language. Her most notable work is the poem 'Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu,' an elegy to the 18th-century Punjabi poet Waris Shah, lamenting the partition of India. She was the first woman to win the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956 and was honored with the Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan, India's fourth and second-highest civilian awards, respectively.
