Empedocles

Empedocles was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher and a citizen of Acragas, a Greek city in Sicily. He is best known for his theory that all matter is composed of four root elements: earth, air, fire, and water. He also proposed the forces of Love and Strife as fundamental principles that cause the mixture and separation of elements.
