Catullus

Gaius Valerius Catullus was a Latin poet of the late Roman Republic who wrote in the neoteric style of poetry. His surviving works are still read for their lively, passionate, and sometimes obscene verses. He is best known for his love poems to a woman he calls Lesbia, widely believed to be a pseudonym for Clodia Metelli, a sophisticated woman from the aristocratic society of the time. Catullus's poetry is noted for its emotional range and direct personal appeal, and his influence can be seen in the work of later poets such as Ovid and Virgil.
