I. L. Peretz, also known as Isaac Leib Peretz or Yitskhok Leybush Peretz, was a Yiddish language author and playwright. Born on May 18, 1852, in Zamość, Poland, and passing away on April 3, 1915, he was a central figure in the Haskalah movement. Peretz wrote poems, short stories, and dramas, and his work is characterized by both traditional Jewish themes and modernist skepticism. He is considered one of the great modernizers of Yiddish literature, alongside Sholem Aleichem and Mendele Mocher Sforim, and his works often explore issues of cultural identity, social justice, and spiritual faith.
