Mary Roberts Rinehart

Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876–1958) was an American author often called the American Agatha Christie. She is considered the source of the phrase 'The butler did it' from her novel 'The Door' (1930), although the phrase does not actually appear in the text. Rinehart is known for her mystery novels and is credited with inventing the 'Had-I-But-Known' school of mystery writing. Her notable works include 'The Circular Staircase' (1908) and 'The Man in Lower Ten' (1909).
