Hannah Senesh

Hannah Senesh (Szenes) was a Jewish poet, playwright, and Special Operations Executive (SOE) paratrooper. Born in Hungary on July 17, 1921, she emigrated to what was then British Mandate Palestine in 1939 and later joined the Haganah, the Jewish defense force. She is best known for her daring mission during World War II, when she parachuted into Yugoslavia to assist in the rescue of Hungarian Jews about to be deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Senesh was captured, tortured, and eventually executed by the Nazis at the age of 23. Her poetry, including the famous poem 'Eli, Eli,' and her diaries have made her an iconic figure of courage and resistance in the face of oppression.
