Epictetus

Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher who lived from approximately 50 AD to 135 AD. He was born a slave in Hierapolis, Phrygia (present-day Pamukkale, Turkey), and lived in Rome until his exile to Nicopolis in northwestern Greece. His teachings were written down and published by his pupil Arrian in the works 'Discourses' and 'Enchiridion'. Epictetus's philosophy is based on the belief that external events are beyond our control; we should accept whatever happens calmly and dispassionately, but we are responsible for our own actions, which we should conduct according to reason.
