Catherine the Great

Catherine the Great, also known as Catherine II, was the Empress of Russia from 1762 until 1796, making her the country's longest-ruling female leader. She was born in Stettin, Prussia (now Szczecin, Poland) and came to power following a coup d'état that she organized, resulting in her husband, Peter III's, overthrow. Catherine was a patron of the arts, literature, and education and corresponded with many of the leading intellectual figures of her time. She played a key role in the cultural westernization of Russia and expanded the Russian Empire. Her reign is often considered the Golden Age of the Russian nobility.
