Avvakum Petrovich was a Russian clergyman and writer who became a leader of the opposition to Patriarch Nikon's reforms in the Russian Orthodox Church. His autobiography, 'The Life of the Archpriest Avvakum,' is one of the earliest Russian autobiographies, notable for its vivid description of his life and times, as well as its use of the vernacular Russian language. He was eventually executed for his opposition to the church reforms.
