George Mackay Brown

George Mackay Brown was a Scottish poet, author, and dramatist, regarded as one of the great Scottish poets of the 20th century. Born on October 17, 1921, in Stromness in the Orkney Islands, he drew much of his inspiration from the history, landscape, and traditions of Orkney. Brown's work is known for its rich imagery and use of local dialect. His most famous works include the novels 'Greenvoe' and 'Magnus', as well as collections of poetry such as 'The Year of the Whale' and 'Fishermen with Ploughs'. He passed away on April 13, 1996.
