Baldassare Castiglione

Baldassare Castiglione was an Italian courtier, diplomat, soldier and a prominent Renaissance author. He is most famous for his work 'Il Cortegiano' or 'The Book of the Courtier', which was written over the course of many years and published in 1528. This book is a philosophical dialogue on the topic of what constitutes an ideal courtier, and it was very influential in Italian and northern European courts. The book explores the concept of sprezzatura, a term he coined to describe a certain nonchalance that allows all one's actions to seem effortless and graceful. Castiglione's work had a significant impact on Renaissance culture and beyond, influencing etiquette, literature, and aesthetics.
