Robert Motherwell

Robert Motherwell was an American painter, printmaker, and editor who was one of the youngest and least experienced artists in the New York School, which was the informal group of American poets, painters, dancers, and musicians active in the 1950s and 1960s in New York City. He was known for his abstract expressionist works and was also a significant voice in the postwar American art world as a theorist and writer. Motherwell's art is characterized by his use of large, bold forms, often in black and white, and his exploration of themes such as life, death, and the human condition.
