Pliny (the Elder)

Pliny the Elder was a Roman author, naturalist, and natural philosopher, as well as naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire, and personal friend of the emperor Vespasian. He wrote the encyclopedic 'Naturalis Historia' (Natural History), which is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman Empire to the modern day and purports to cover all ancient knowledge. Pliny the Elder died in AD 79 while attempting to rescue friends by ship from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
