Heraclitus

Heraclitus was an ancient Greek philosopher born in Ephesus, Ionia (near modern-day Selçuk, Turkey) around 535 BCE. He is often referred to as 'The Obscure' and is known for his doctrine of change being central to the universe, summarized in the phrase 'panta rhei' (everything flows). He believed in the unity of opposites and that fire is the primary substance of the world. Heraclitus's work survives only in fragments quoted by other authors, but his ideas have had a lasting influence on the development of Western philosophy.
