Gerald Durrell

Gerald Durrell was a British naturalist, zookeeper, conservationist, author, and television presenter. He founded the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Jersey Zoo on the Channel Island of Jersey in 1959. Durrell wrote a number of books based on his life as an animal collector and enthusiast, most famously the autobiographical 'My Family and Other Animals' (1956), which tells the story of his childhood years spent on the Greek island of Corfu. His work has been credited with helping to change the way zoos are operated, placing a greater emphasis on conservation and animal welfare.
