Tchicaya U Tam'si was the pen name of Gérald Félix Tchicaya, a Congolese poet who is widely considered one of the most influential African poets of the 20th century. Born on June 25, 1931, in Mpili, Congo, he was known for his work that reflected the complex legacy of colonialism and the quest for African identity. His poetry is characterized by its lyrical intensity and often incorporates themes of political struggle, cultural heritage, and human emotion. Tchicaya U Tam'si passed away on April 22, 1988, in Bazancourt, France.
