Sol Plaatje

Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was a South African intellectual, journalist, linguist, politician, translator and writer. He was a founding member and first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress, which would become the African National Congress. Plaatje was a key figure in the early opposition to apartheid, and he is also known for his translations of Shakespeare's works into the Setswana language and for his diary, which was one of the first English-language novels by a black South African.
