Abridgment is a book category for shortened versions of longer works that preserve the essential plot, characters, themes and arguments while removing or compressing subsidiary scenes, extended descriptions, and nonessential detail. Abridged editions are produced to make material more accessible or time-efficient—common for classics, long non‑fiction, language-learner texts, children’s editions, and audio releases—and are usually edited with the aim of keeping the original’s core meaning and narrative flow. Unlike adaptations, which reimagine or relocate a story, or summaries, which merely outline key points, abridgments remain text-based condensed editions that can alter pacing and tone and are often released with editorial notes about what was changed.
