"Dream vision" is a narrative category in which a dream (or trance/vision) frames the story and supplies its plot, imagery and logic: the narrator falls asleep or is transported into a surreal, symbolic realm where events unfold according to dream-logic rather than literal realism. These works use allegory, mythic figures, personified ideas and uncanny landscapes to explore moral, spiritual, psychological or philosophical questions, and they often leave the boundary between waking and dreaming ambiguous. Dream visions have roots in medieval literature but appear across periods and forms—from prophetic and devotional texts to modernist and speculative fiction—and are characterized by vivid imagery, an unreliable perspective, and a focus on inner transformation or social critique rather than strictly causal action.
