Exchangeability

Exchangeability is a cross-disciplinary book category for works that explore what it means to treat things as interchangeable—objects, values, data, roles, or identities—and the systems that rely on or challenge that assumption. It spans nonfiction on markets and money, fungibility and standardization, barter and tokenization, probability and statistics (including symmetry and de Finetti–style reasoning), and algorithmic or legal frameworks that presume equivalence; and it includes fiction that dramatizes swaps and substitutions—body- or life-swaps, twins and clones, role reversals, parallel lives, and replaceable narrators. At its core, the category asks when substitution is valid, who defines equivalence, what is lost or gained in the trade, and how norms, technology, and power shape the ethics and consequences of treating units—be they goods, datapoints, or selves—as the same.
