“Humors” is a category for books that engage with the classical theory of the four humors—blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile—and the temperaments they were believed to shape (sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric, melancholic). It encompasses early modern “comedies of humours” and other literature built around single-dominant-trait characters; histories of medicine and culture from Hippocrates and Galen through the Renaissance; studies of mood, melancholy, and personality; and contemporary fiction, essays, and speculative works that reinterpret humoral thinking. The emphasis is on how bodily balance was thought to govern character, health, and society—distinct from “humor” as comedy—offering a lens on evolving ideas of temperament and emotion.
