“Parlements” as a book category refers to works on the sovereign high courts of the French Ancien Régime—most notably the Parlement of Paris and its provincial counterparts—which from the 13th to late 18th centuries served as appellate courts, registered (and could delay) royal edicts, and issued remonstrances that shaped politics, law, and public opinion. Titles in this category cover institutional history and jurisprudence, landmark cases and arrêts, procedural and criminal justice, censorship and the book trade, the social world of the noblesse de robe (magistrates), and major conflicts with the crown (the Fronde, Jansenist controversies, fiscal disputes), including reforms like Maupeou’s and the parlements’ abolition in the Revolution. It can include regional studies (Paris, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Grenoble, etc.), biographies, primary sources (registers, remonstrances), and comparative studies of early modern high courts. Not to be confused with legislative “parliaments,” this category centers on the judicial bodies known in French as parlements.
