“Punjab, India” as a book category encompasses works focused on the Indian state of Punjab—its history, culture, and contemporary life. Titles may cover the region’s rich heritage of Sikhism and the Sikh Gurus, the Golden Temple at Amritsar, the legacy of Partition, and the Green Revolution’s impact on agriculture and society. Readers will find fiction and poetry in Punjabi (Gurmukhi), Hindi, and English; folklore and oral traditions; studies of music and dance such as bhangra and giddha; and explorations of cuisine, festivals, and everyday rural-urban life. The category also includes travel and place-based writing, biographies and memoirs, political and social histories (including the insurgency of the 1980s), and analyses of language, identity, and diaspora. While acknowledging cross-border history with Pakistani Punjab, the focus is on the Indian side’s geography, institutions, and communities. Suitable for scholars and general readers alike, it provides a gateway to understanding Punjab’s people, past, and vibrant cultural expressions.

1. Life And Words by Veena Das
Violence and the Descent into the Ordinary
An anthropological exploration of how collective and intimate violence become woven into everyday life in urban India, especially in the aftermath of Partition and the 1984 anti-Sikh pogroms. Drawing on long-term ethnography, it traces how pain, memory, and speech circulate within families and neighborhoods, how the state and medical institutions engage suffering, and how ethical life is remade through ordinary practices. Rather than treating trauma as a singular rupture, it shows how wounds are absorbed into daily routines through silence, testimony, and care, reconfiguring social relations. The analysis probes the politics of recognition, the limits of language, and the complex work of witnessing.
