Samizdat refers to literature created, copied, and circulated outside official publishing to evade censorship, most famously in the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc. As a book category, it includes clandestine, self-published, or underground works—dissident essays, political and religious texts, banned fiction and poetry, unauthorized translations, memoirs, and critical scholarship—typically reproduced in small runs (typewritten carbon copies, mimeographs, later photocopies) and passed hand-to-hand through informal networks.
