Underground comix is a category for small-press, creator-owned comic books that grew out of the 1960s–70s counterculture and are characterized by raw, experimental art and frank, often transgressive content—sex, drugs, politics and social satire—that mainstream comics avoided. Typically self-published or released by independent presses and distributed outside traditional channels (head shops, independent bookstores, later direct-market shops), underground comix prioritize personal voice, free expression and social critique, frequently use adult language and imagery, and helped launch alternative comics movements; the spelling "comix" signals this break from mainstream industry norms.
