George Seferis

George Seferis was a distinguished Greek poet and diplomat, born on March 13, 1900, in Smyrna, Ottoman Empire (now Izmir, Turkey). He is considered one of the most important Greek poets of the 20th century and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1963. Seferis was also a career diplomat and served in the Greek diplomatic service from 1926 to 1962. His poetry is characterized by a deep sense of Hellenism, exploring themes of identity, exile, and return. He died on September 20, 1971, in Athens, Greece.
