The New Conspiracism and the Assault on Democracy
An examination of the rise of “new conspiracism,” in which bare assertion, repetition, and online amplification replace evidence and coherent theory. Drawing on contemporary political examples, it shows how these claims delegitimize institutions, erode shared reality, and normalize antidemocratic behavior. It also explains why conventional fact-checking often fails and proposes responses—naming and shunning conspiracism, strengthening gatekeeping, and rebuilding civic trust—to defend democratic norms.
