  1. 1. The Divine Christ

Paul, the Lord Jesus, and the Scriptures of Israel

A concise study of how Paul’s letters present Jesus as sharing in the unique identity of Israel’s God, arguing that a “high” Christology emerged within the earliest decades of the movement. Through close readings of key passages (such as 1 Corinthians 8:6 and Philippians 2:6–11), attention to Old Testament YHWH citations applied to Jesus, and analysis of early devotional practices, it shows that names, roles, and honors reserved for God—creation, worship, prayer, and lordship—are attributed to Christ within a Jewish monotheistic framework.

  2. 2. Old Testament Yahweh Texts In Paul's Christology

This study argues that Paul consistently applies Old Testament passages originally referring to Israel’s God (YHWH) to Jesus, indicating that he understood Jesus to share in the divine identity. By analyzing citations and allusions in the Pauline letters—especially the Septuagint’s use of “Lord” (kyrios)—it traces a coherent pattern in which texts like Joel 2:32 and Isaiah 45:23 are reread christologically. The book clarifies Paul’s hermeneutical methods and criteria for identifying such Yahweh texts, and explores the implications for early Christian worship and monotheism. It concludes that a high Christology emerged within the earliest strata of the church.
