1. Gem In The Lotus
The Seeding of Indian Civilisation
A sweeping history of early India, from prehistoric cultures and the Indus cities through the Vedic age and the rise of states to the Mauryas and the early classical era. It traces the formation of religious and philosophical traditions, the growth of urban life and empire, and the interplay of culture, economy, and power, drawing on archaeology and ancient texts. Alongside achievements in thought and art, it examines social hierarchies, gender norms, and political violence that shaped the subcontinent’s foundations.
