Archytas

Ancient Greek Pythagorean philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, and statesman from Tarentum (Magna Graecia). A friend of Plato, he led Tarentum as a general, advanced the theory of proportions and harmonic acoustics, proposed a solution to doubling the cube, and is credited with early work in mechanics, including a legendary flying wooden 'pigeon' automaton.
