  1. 1. Parody In The Middle Ages

    The Latin Tradition

A study of medieval Latin parody that shows how humorous imitations of liturgy, scripture, and learned discourse functioned as both sanctioned play and pointed critique within clerical and scholastic culture; surveying mock masses and prayers, goliardic songs, and spoof charters, it analyzes their techniques, audiences, and contexts, and argues that such works simultaneously questioned and reaffirmed religious and institutional authority in the Middle Ages.
