1. Mass Deportations And Deportees In The Neo Assyrian Empire
A scholarly study of the Neo-Assyrian state’s systematic use of population transfers as a core instrument of imperial governance, exploring the political, economic, and military motives behind deportations and the bureaucratic mechanisms that made them possible. It reconstructs the lived realities of deportees—their legal status, labor roles, settlement patterns, integration, and cultural resilience—through royal inscriptions, administrative texts, and archaeological evidence. The analysis situates deportation within broader strategies of provincial development and urban growth, reassesses biblical and classical accounts against cuneiform sources, and shows how controlled resettlement underpinned the stability and expansion of Assyrian rule.
