Japanese Rinzai Zen Buddhist monk, calligrapher, poet, and tea practitioner; adviser to Tokugawa Iemitsu and the swordsman Yagyū Munenori; best known for The Unfettered Mind, influential in Zen aesthetics and martial arts philosophy of the early Edo period.
