1. Teachers Versus The Public
This book analyzes the persistent gap between teachers’ attitudes and those of the general public on major education issues, showing how teachers tend to favor policies that protect their professional interests (such as opposition to vouchers and market-based reforms, skepticism about high-stakes testing, and support for greater school spending and union influence) while the public is more likely to endorse accountability, choice, and systemic reforms; drawing on survey data and commentary, the author examines the sources of these differences, their implications for education policy debates, and the challenges they pose for democratic decision-making about schools.
