The Struggle For Identity In A Market Based Society

The book argues that neoliberal market logic has reshaped how people form identities, turning individuals into entrepreneurial, performance-driven subjects whose worth is measured by productivity and market value. Drawing on psychoanalysis and social research, it links rising anxiety, depression and loneliness to precarious work, weakened social bonds and the commodification of relationships and the self, and critiques how therapeutic and self-help cultures can reinforce market norms. It calls for renewed emphasis on attachment, solidarity and public institutions to rebuild social belonging and counter the mental-health harms produced by marketization.
