A courtly political drama set after a dynastic overthrow, it follows the brilliant strategist Chanakya as he uses deception, forged letters, disguises and subtle diplomacy to outwit Rākṣasa, the loyal minister of the ousted regime, and secure the allegiance of officials for the new ruler. Through intrigue, rhetorical contests and shifting loyalties the play examines themes of statesmanship, loyalty, legitimacy and the moral ambiguities of political power.
