  1. 1. The Macro Polity

This book develops a macro-level account of American politics, arguing that aggregate public opinion and electoral outcomes move in systematic, predictable ways in response to national economic conditions, presidential performance, and major political events; using time-series and other aggregate data, it shows that these national-level forces produce partisan tides, shifts in policy mood, and measurable effects on voting and approval that cannot be fully explained by individual-level microtheories alone.
