John the Apostle

One of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, traditionally identified as the son of Zebedee and brother of James. Associated in later tradition with the author(s) of Johannine writings (the Gospel of John, the Epistles of John, and Revelation), though authorship and identification with John the Evangelist and John of Patmos are debated by scholars.

  1. 1. Niv, Gospel Of John

An evocative, theological portrait of Jesus that opens with the cosmic declaration 'In the beginning was the Word' and unfolds through signs, teachings, and 'I am' sayings to present him as the incarnate Son of God whose life, death, and resurrection bring eternal life to those who believe. It emphasizes intimate encounters—such as with Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, and Mary and Martha—records miracles like the raising of Lazarus, and includes extended farewell discourses and a priestly prayer that prepare the disciples for mission. Written to inspire faith, it stresses both the divinity of Jesus and the personal, relational nature of believing.
