Valentinus

Valentinus was an influential early Christian gnostic theologian. He is thought to have been born in Phrebonis in the Nile delta and educated in Alexandria, Egypt. Valentinus almost became Bishop of Rome. He flourished around the middle of the 2nd century AD and was the founder of Valentinianism, one of the major Gnostic movements. His teachings included a complex cosmology and a belief in a spiritual fullness (Pleroma) from which a series of emanations occurred. Few of his writings survive, and much of what is known about him comes from his Christian opponents like Irenaeus.
