Heinrich Harrer

Heinrich Harrer was an Austrian mountaineer, sportsman, geographer, and writer. He is best known for his books 'Seven Years in Tibet' and 'The White Spider'. Harrer was part of the first team that successfully climbed the North Face of the Eiger in Switzerland. During World War II, he was interned in India by the British authorities but escaped and traveled to Tibet, where he became a tutor and friend to the 14th Dalai Lama. His experiences in Tibet were the basis for his most famous book, 'Seven Years in Tibet', which has been adapted into a film.
