John Hanning Speke

John Hanning Speke (1827–1864) was a British explorer and officer in the British Indian Army. He is most famous for his exploration of Africa and his search for the source of the Nile River. Speke was the first European to reach Lake Victoria, which he correctly identified as the source of the Nile. His findings were the subject of much debate at the time, but were later confirmed by other explorers. His expeditions were key contributions to the European exploration of Africa during the Victorian era.
