How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic

Based on a comprehensive database and interviews, this work analyzes patterns and pathways behind mass public shootings, showing how childhood trauma, social isolation, grievance and suicidal intent, fascination with weapons, and prior warning behaviors combine with cultural, institutional, and media factors to produce violence; it argues against simplistic explanations and offers research-driven prevention measures—ranging from limiting access to firearms and changing media coverage to threat assessment, community and mental-health interventions, and policy reforms—aimed at reducing both the incidence and contagion of mass shootings.
