John Wesley Powell
American geologist, U.S. Army veteran and explorer best known for leading the 1869 expedition down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon; later served in scientific administration, including leadership roles at the U.S. Geological Survey and the Smithsonian's Bureau of Ethnology.
