Juan Carlos Onetti Borges

Uruguayan novelist and short-story writer, a major figure in 20th-century Latin American literature. Known for works set in the fictional town of Santa María (e.g., El pozo, La vida breve, El astillero) and for his dark, existential style. Recipient of the Premio Cervantes (1980).
