Uruguayan novelist and short-story writer, a major figure in 20th-century Latin American literature. Known for works set in the fictional town of Santa MarĂ­a (e.g., El pozo, La vida breve, El astillero) and for his dark, existential style. Recipient of the Premio Cervantes (1980).
