1. The Hacker Ethic
and the Spirit of the Information Age
The book contrasts the traditional Protestant work ethic with a new "hacker" ethic rooted in passion-driven, creative labor and intrinsic motivation; it portrays hackers as valuing freedom, mastery, playful exploration, peer recognition, and openness over hierarchy, rigid schedules, or purely financial incentives. Drawing on examples from open-source communities and networked technologies, it argues that the information age requires new social and economic institutions that support flexible, meaningful work while combining innovation with social security to promote human flourishing.
