A teenage boy survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum that kills his mother and, in a moment of shock, steals a small, famous painting of a goldfinch; the theft becomes the secret center of his adult life. Haunted by grief and guilt, he drifts through addiction, criminal schemes and fraught relationships while a turbulent friendship formed abroad and the painting pull him into the shadowy art world. The novel is an elegiac, suspenseful coming-of-age about loss, obsession, and how beauty can both save and ruin a life.
