    Set in early eighteenth-century Acadia, the novel follows two lovers whose lives are shaped by the clash of empire. It is based on the real-life love of Louise de Freneuse, married and widowed twice, and Pierre de Bonaventure, a captain in the French navy. Their doomed relationship helps them endure the day-to-day struggles of the besieged Port Royal settlement and portrays the hearts of Acadian settlers, government officials and Native allies.
