1. Rumpelstiltskin
A poor miller’s boast that his daughter can spin straw into gold brings her before a greedy ruler who locks her in a room and demands the impossible; when she cannot, a strange imp-like man appears and spins the straw into gold in exchange for her jewelry and, finally, for a promise of her firstborn child. Years later, after she has married the king and a baby is born, the creature returns to claim his prize but offers her three days to guess his name; she overhears him singing it to himself, names him correctly, and, thwarted and enraged, he destroys himself, freeing the mother and child.
