Willem Frederik Hermans

Dutch novelist, short story writer, poet and critic, one of the major postwar Dutch authors. Best known for novels such as De donkere kamer van Damokles (The Darkroom of Damocles) and Nooit meer slapen (Beyond Sleep), and for his terse, often pessimistic view of human nature.

  1. 1. La Camera Oscura Di Damocle

A timid small‑shop owner becomes embroiled in the wartime underground when a charismatic, almost mirrorlike agent recruits him for covert missions that include sabotage and murder; after liberation the agent has vanished, there is no corroborating evidence for his story, and the protagonist is prosecuted and disbelieved, leaving his memories, motives and identity contested. The novel probes the slipperiness of truth, the moral ambiguity of resistance and collaboration, and how official records, perception and guilt can shape — or erase — a life.
