  1. 1. The Liberal Archipelago

A Theory of Diversity and Freedom

A sustained defense of a pluralist liberalism that treats political society as an archipelago of diverse, voluntarily chosen associations, arguing that legitimate political authority should protect individuals’ freedom to form and live within different ways of life rather than enforcing a single moral ideal. It insists on toleration and voluntary association as central: communities should be free to govern themselves so long as membership is voluntary and individuals retain the right to leave, while the state’s role is limited to providing a framework that allows coexistence among competing conceptions of the good. The book critiques both moralistic state intervention and monolithic views of citizenship, urging a politics that prizes diversity, exit options, and minimal coercion as the best safeguard of liberty in plural societies.
